Can you believe that the (HIQA) Health Information and Quality Authority in conjunction with (WHO) World Health Organization are charging Irish patients €345 to attend this conference? (The minister for health is one of the guest speakers).
The Health Information and Quality Authority together with the World Alliance for Patient Safety is hosting the first international conference on patient safety in Croke Park Conference Centre, Dublin on Thursday, 6 September 2007.
Patient’s together emailed HIQA in relation to this matter:
Ruth could you kindly express to your committee my shock that HIQA&WHO would expect patients and their families/carers to have a fee of €345 available to attend what seems a worthwhile and welcomed conference.
Patients together feel that by charging €345 you have excluded mostly likely any voluntary patients group ie. Patients together, a vast section of ordinary patients and most definitely those with medical card, in other words, a huge section of the people who use the system.
The conference in the words of HIQA is for Patient Safety to undertake a major collaborative project on patient safety. The project aims to drive learning while supporting patients, families and clinicians in the aftermath of a patient safety incident.
At the conference we will formally launch the project and look at ways of bringing together all the relevant stakeholders; information and experience in order to assist in the development of International Consensus Guidance
The full day conference is open to all those interested in patient safety including health care professionals, regulatory bodies, patient groups, academia, public representatives and of course, patients and their families and carers.
It seems strange to us that a conference whose aim it is to bring together all interested bodies could so blatantly exclude a whole section of society. It is unfortunate that finances dictated who will learn form this conference and who will be heard.
Thanks Ruth
